Here are some Group Policy settings that will greatly improve login times over an Direct Access connection. Note: test well, there might be some side affects.
- Login times measured with a UMTS – 3G connection: 60-90 seconds 100 – 140 ms latency
- Login times measured with a UMTS – HDSPA connection: 30-40 seconds. 80-100 ms latency

If result are still not ‘good enough, you might consider the ‘Enable the Always Offline Mode’ http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh968298.aspx for example ‘Field Workers’.
